1e Klas cafe in Amsterdam

This is a cafe called 1e Klas (first class) inside Amsterdam Centraal Station. It is a former waiting room for first class passengers, and its beautiful Art Nouveau interior from the 19th century is worth visiting for. I had a lunch there before my departure on my last day in Amsterdam. 

アムステルダム中央駅の構内にある1e Klas（ファーストクラス）というカフェ。駅のカフェと言っても、ここは元、一等車の乗客のための待合室だったというだけあって、19世紀に造られたそのアールヌーボーの美しい内装は一見の価値あり。アムステルダム最後の日、出発前にここでお昼を食べてみる事にしました。

However, what I was really excited about rather than the Art Nouveau interior was the cafe’s mascot parrot!

しかしながら、アールヌーボーの内装よりも私がもっと感動したのは、ここのカフェのマスコットとして飼われているオウムでした！

When I got up to go to the bathroom, I noticed there was a parrot at the end of the counter. I was so surprised and went up to it, and it also came towards me. As soon as I held out my hand to it, it crawled up onto my palm, started climbing up my arm, and finally stopped on my shoulder as if it found a perfect resting place.  

化粧室に行こうと席を立った時、カウンターのはじにオウムがいるのを発見。びっくりして近づくと、オウムは私の方へと近寄ってきました。オウムの方へ手を差し伸べると、すぐさま私の手のひらへ乗ってきて、そこから腕へとどんどんよじ上ってきて、最後に肩まで上るとそこでやっと落ち着き場所を見つけたように止まりました。

I was very happy that I became friends with the parrot so easily, but on the other hand, I didn’t really know what to do to take it down from my shoulder, with its claws tangled up with my jumper. As I stood there looking lost, a waiter saw me far away  and came to my rescue. He took the parrot down from my shoulder, and started lulling it as if he was cuddling a baby. The parrot was very tame, and looked happy in his arms. According to the waiter, the parrot is a young boy, only 7 years old (apparently parrots live as long as humans, and their life span is about 80 years).  

オウムとこんなにすぐに仲良くなれたのは嬉しかった反面、私のセーターにがっしりと食い込んでいるオウムの爪をどうやってはずせばいいものかと迷っていると、その姿を遠くから見ていたウエイターさんが助けにきてくれました。ウエイターさんは私の肩から上手にオウムをおろし、まるで赤ちゃんをだっこするように、自分の胸の前でオウムを抱えてあやし始めました。オウムはとても慣れているようで、気持ち良さそうに抱かれていました。ウエイターさんの話によると、オウムは男の子で、年齢はまだ子どもで7歳だそうです（オウムの寿命は人間と同じぐらいで80年ぐらいだそうです）。

Amsterdam’s pancakes

When I think of Dutch food the first to come to mind is pancakes. Naturally I tasted some in the home of pancakes.

オランダの料理と言えばパンケーキ。当然のことながら本場で味見をしてきました。

A bacon pancake I ate at the cafe in the Amsterdam History Museum. The sweetness of the maple syrup and saltiness of the bacon were the best match! 

何気なくランチに入った、アムステルダム歴史博物館のカフェ。そこで食べたベーコンパンケーキです。メープルシロップをかけていただきます。メープルシロップの甘さとベーコンの塩味が何とも言えない絶妙な組み合わせで美味！

This is a sweet pancake with pineapple and ginger. It was topped with ginger compote on sautéed pineapples. Also at the cafe in the Amsterdam History Museum. 

こちらはパイナップルとジンジャーの甘いパンケーキ。ソテーしたパイナップルの上にジンジャーのコンポートが乗っています。同じくアムステルダム歴史博物館のカフェで。

I also went to The Pancake Bakery, which is (apparently) ‘the most famous Dutch pancake house in Amsterdam’. This is a savoury pancake with chorizo, salami, paprika, tomato and cheese.

「アムステルダムで一番有名なオランダ風パンケーキ屋」と言われている（らしい）The Pancake Bakery（パンケーキベーカリー）というお店にも行ってきました。こちらはチョリソー、サラミ、パプリカ、トマト、そしてチーズがトッピングされたパンケーキ。

Sweet pancake also at The Pancake Bakery. It was topped with apple, cinnamon ice cream, cinnamon liqueur and whipped cream. It was really tasty!

同じくThe Pancake Bakery（パンケーキベーカリー）の甘いパンケーキ。リンゴ、シナモンアイスクリーム、シナモンリキュール、そしてホイップクリームのトッピング。これは確かにおいしかった！

Cute window in Amsterdam

There seems to be so many interesting windows in Amsterdam. This is one of them, which I saw at night time. 

アムステルダムには面白いウィンドーが沢山あるようです。これもそのうちの一つで、夜歩いていて見かけました。

There were vintage porcelain ladies heads displayed in the window. I wasn’t sure if this was a someones house or art gallery or a shop from outside. Still I couldn’t see any shop sign.

ウィンドーの中には陶器で出来たヴィンテージのレディーたちの頭が飾られていました。外からは一体普通の家なのか、アートギャラリーなのか、またはお店か何かなのはわかりませんでした。でもお店の看板のようなものは見つかりませんでした。

The ladies and the stained glass on the inner window behind them go very well together. 

レディーたちと、その後ろにある内窓のステンドグラスがよく合っていて素敵。

It was full of beautiful things and I wanted all of them!

どれも見ていて欲しくなる物ばかりでした。

I didn’t have a chance to go back there, and could’t find out what the place was after all. Anyway, there seemed to be many homes in Amsterdam, who were showing off their precious collections to the public, like the house with Christmas decorations. So I think probably it is also an ordinary home just like the others. 

後日そこには戻るチャンスがなかったので、結局その場所が一体何だったのかは分からずじまいです。でも、クリスマスの飾りを世間に披露していた家をはじめとして、アムステルダムには自分の大事なコレクションを自慢げに披露している家庭が多いようなので、多分ここも普通の人の家なのかも知れないと思っています。

Christmas window in Amsterdam

I walked passed this house at night, and saw an amazing window display. Hundreds of beautiful glass Christmas ornaments were hanging inside the window. Because the blind was wide open, despite it being night, exposing the front room to the public, it made me think maybe it wasn’t an ordinary home but some kind of shop, although I could’t tell what kind of shop it was. At first, I thought it might be a quirky shop selling stuff, but inside the window seemed to be a kitchen with a large table in the middle, which made me wonder if it could be a homely cafe. Still I couldn’t see any sign outside. I really wanted to find out what this place was, so I decided to come back next day.

夜、ある家の前を通りかかった時、ものすごいウィンドーディスプレーを見かけました。何百個ものガラスで出来たかわいいクリスマスの飾りが窓の中に飾られているのです。夜だというのにブラインドは全開で、明かりは消えていたものの部屋の中は丸見えだったため、ひょっとしてこれは一般家庭ではなくお店かも、でも一体何屋？と思わせるような不思議な光景でした。初めは風変わりな雑貨屋かもと思いましたが、窓の中はキッチンらしく、真ん中に大きなテーブルが置かれていたので、ひょっとしてアットホームなカフェかも、とも考えました。しかしお店の看板も全く見当たらず。どうしても気になって仕方が無かったので、次の日改めてその家を訪ねてみる事にしました。

When I visited the place on the following day, I saw the back of a man making tea in the kitchen through the window. I then realised that this place was neither a cafe or a shop, but an ordinary home, which was just showing off their extraordinary window display to the public!

次の日の日中にその場所を訪れてみると、キッチンの中で男の人がお茶を入れている後ろ姿を発見。どうやらここはカフェでも雑貨屋でもなく、ただものすごいウィンドーディスプレーを世間に披露している一般家庭らしい、という事に気付きました。

When the man turned around, I waved at him raising my camera, and asked him with a gesture if it was all right to take some pictures. He said OK by giving me the thumbs-up. He then disappeared into the next room with a mug of tea in his hand, probably being considerate toward me. 

男の人がこちらを振り返った時、手を振ってカメラをかかげながら、写真を撮ってもいいかとジェスチャーで訊ねると、あちらも親指を立ててOKとジェスチャーで返事をしてくれました。そして気を利かせてくれたようで、お茶の入ったマグカップを持って隣の部屋へと消えてゆきました。

Once I’ve got a permission from the resident, I started taking loads of pictures! There were more ornaments hanging from the chandelier inside the kitchen, although I wasn’t able to capture them because of the reflection of the window.

そして一旦住人の許可を取ったや否や、もうバンバン写真を撮りまくりました（笑）ガラスの反射のせいで部屋の中までは写せなかったのですが、キッチンの天井から下がっているシャンデリアにも何十個もの飾りが吊り下げられていました。

一つ一つの飾りがとにかくかわいい！

None of them were the same.

どれ一つとして同じものはありませんでした。

I wonder how much time he spent to collect so many cute ornaments.

一体どれ程の歳月をかけて、こんなに沢山のかわいい飾りを集めたのでしょうか。

I also wonder where he found such cute ornaments. 

そして一体どこでこんなにかわいい飾りを見つけるのでしょうか。

Indeed I understand why he wants to show them off to the public. I would feel the same if I had such a lovely collection!

確かにこんなに素敵なコレクションがあったら、世間に向けて自慢したい気持ちは納得。

P.S. There was a cute cat in the kitchen as well.

Unicorn Boutique in Amsterdam

The area I stayed seemed to be the coolest part of Amsterdam’s city centre. I saw many cute and stylish shops, restaurants and bars in this area.
Especially, I loved this vintage shop called Unicorn Boutique. I discovered this shop just because I happened to walk passed it on the night of my arrival. The shop was closed then, but I saw all the amazing things displayed in the window. I was so excited and determined to come back next day. 

私が泊まっていた場所はアムステルダムの中心部の中で一番オシャレなエリアのようでした。かわいくて素敵なお店やレストランやバーを沢山見かけました。
特に気に入ったのはUnicorn Boutique(ユニコーンブティック)というヴィンテージのお店でした。到着した日の夜、たまたまお店の前を通りかかって発見しました。その時お店は閉まっていましたが、ウィンドーの中に沢山の素敵な物たちが飾ってあるのが見えました。とても興奮して、次の日絶対戻ってこようと心に決めました。 

The next day when I visited there again, the shop was open. Inside, the shop was full of small and beautiful vintage objects, and it reminded me of my own room. The owner was a very friendly lady, and she started speaking to me with a smily face. When I said to her “I saw the shop window last night, and thought I had to come back next day”, she enthusiastically told me the story about her shop and all her vintage items. Every single vintage item was found by her through travelling, and she calls them her ‘treasures’. Her role is to find ‘treasures’ for customers, and she hopes that customers then find those objects in her shop, and they will become ‘treasures’ for each customer. She sounded very much like myself as I call my collections ‘precious’, so we got on well and I really enjoyed chatting with her. 

次の日再びそこへ戻ると、お店は開いていました。中に入るとそこは小さな素敵なヴィンテージの品々でいっぱいで、ちょっと自分の部屋を彷彿とさせるものがありました。オーナーの女性はとても気さくな方で、ニコニコしながら話しかけてくれました。「前の晩に外からウィンドーを見て、絶対今日戻ってこようと思った」という話をすると、自分のお店とヴィンテージの品々について熱く語ってくれました。全てのヴィンテージのひとつひとつは、彼女が自分の足で旅して見つけたものだそうで、それらを自分の「宝物」と呼んでいるそうです。彼女の役割はお客さんたちのために「宝物」を見つけてくる事で、それを今度はお客さんたちが彼女のお店で見つけて、それぞれの人の「宝物」になったらいいなと話してくれました。自分のコレクションのひとつひとつを「宝物」と呼んでいるのは、私も全く同様だったのでつい話が弾み、意気投合してしまいまいした。

Opticians window in Amsterdam

On the way back from the food market, I saw interesting looking lamb toys in a far away shop window.

フードマーケットからの帰り、遠くのお店のウィンドーに何だか気になるヒツジのお人形を発見。

and realised it was an opticians.

なんとそこは眼鏡屋さんでした。

Unfortunately, the shop was closed…

でも残念な事に、お店は閉まっていました…

Cat in Amsterdam

As I was walking through a street with many stylish shops, I saw a cat sleeping, all curled up in a window.

おしゃれなお店が建ち並ぶ通りを歩きながらふと見ると、ウィンドーの一つにネコが丸くなって寝ている姿を発見。

I saw this cute pink house near a Saturday food market in the Western Canal Ring.

このかわいいピンクの家は、ヨルダーン地区で土曜日に開かれているフードマーケットの近くで見かけました。

I love this pastel pink colour. I wonder who lives there…

このパステルピンクの色がとても素敵で気に入りました。一体どんな人が住んでいるのでしょうか…

Miffy Shop in Amsterdam

Speaking of Holland, I always think of Dick Bruna’s Miffy. When my trip to Amsterdam was planned, I was determined to find cute Miffy goods. I discovered that there was a Miffy shop in Amsterdam, so I travelled all the way there through the heavy snow on the day of my arrival. 

オランダと言えば、ディック・ブルーナのミッフィー。アムステルダムに行く事が決まった時、必ずかわいいミッフィーグッズを見つけてくると心に誓ったのは言う間でもありません。アムステルダムにミッフィーショップがある事を発見し、到着当日雪の中はるばる行ってきました（笑）

The Miffy shop was situated on the outskirts of the city centre. It felt like it was the middle of nowhere. I saw a Miffy light glowing in the dark sky.

ミッフィーショップは普通の観光客が行かないような、アムステルダムの中心地から少しかけ離れた所にありました。日が暮れ出した街の空に浮かぶミッフィーの照明を発見。

Amsterdam in the snow

I went to Amsterdam just before Christmas in 2010.
It was snowing heavily on the day I arrived. In fact, Amsterdam Schiphol airport was closed due to the snow, so I had to fly to Rotterdam and travel for an hour to Amsterdam by train.
However, it was all an interesting experience, and I really enjoyed my first visit there…and most of all, I found so many cute things!

2010年のクリスマス直前にアムステルダムに行ってきました。
到着した日、アムステルダムは大雪が降っていました。実際、アムステルダムのスキポール空港は雪で閉鎖、そのためロッテルダムに飛行機で飛び、そこから電車で1時間かけてアムステルダムに行く羽目になりました。
それでも全てはなかなか面白い体験で、初めて行ったアムステルダムをとても楽しんできました。そしてなにより、かわいいものを沢山見つけてきました！
